Inspired by the true story of Sister Helen Prejean's relationship with a condemned man and adapted from her book of the same name, this film examines crime, punishment and redemption. Sr Helen is a Catholic nun living in rural Louisiana who begins corresponding with Matthew Poncelet, a convicted murderer scheduled to be executed soon. Sr Helen agrees to serve as Matthew's spiritual adviser and begins a campaign to spare his life. When it becomes obvious that Matthew's sentence will be carried out, Sister Helen offers what comfort she can to Matthew, but tries to guide him to an open admission of the extent of his crimes and an acceptance of divine forgiveness. Note: film runs for 2 hours.
